Erin stared out the window, replaying everything that had happened, starting with that conversation with Chief Blackstone.

How could the man be so rude? Such a jerk? And how had he gotten away with it for so long?

She believed in cops. Believed that they did good work. She hated the fact that a couple of bad ones could make all cops look bad, even when that wasn’t the case.

But once certain people got into positions of power, like Blackstone had, it felt nearly impossible to change that. To oust them from their positions. And because that was the case, the power trips just seem to keep growing.

Chief Blackstone’s was the biggest one of all right now.

“Listen, I know you don’t know me that well,” Dillon started beside her. “I don’t want this to sound weird. But I don’t think you should stay at your place by yourself tonight.”

Erin froze at Dillon’s words. She knew exactly what he was getting at.

Her place wasn’t safe.

She wasn’t safe.

Erin didn’t want to stay by herself, either. But short of leaving town to go stay with family, she didn’t have many options. There was no way she would leave this area with Bella still missing.

Dillon had stayed on her couch last night, but she couldn’t ask him to do that again. It was too much.

“I’m sure I’ll be fine.” She didn’t sound convincing, even to her own ears.

“How would you feel about sleeping in the spare bedroom at my place? Carson and I will be there, along with all the dogs, of course. You’d have your own space and most people wouldn’t even know that you’re staying out there.”

He raised a good point. Everybody would assume she was staying at her place. Maybe that would allow her to get some rest so she could start fresh the next morning.

“Are you sure you really don’t mind? You’re going deeper and deeper with me, and I’m afraid that it’s going to ruin things for you here in this town.”

He ducked his head until they were eye to eye. “Erin, I know it probably feels like everybody here hates you, but I have a hard time believing that’s true. Anybody who knows you can clearly see you have a good heart. That you’re a good person. Just because a few people—a few loud people—bad-mouth you, don’t think they speak for everyone.”

Something about his words caused her cheeks to warm. He sounded so sincere, so much like he was speaking the truth. She hadn’t expected to crave hearing an affirmation like that. His words brought a strange sense of comfort to her.

“Thank you.” Her throat burned as the words left her lips. “I really appreciate that. If you don’t mind, I think I will take you up on your offer. I’d feel better if I wasn’t at that house by myself tonight.”

“Let me just run you past your place so you can pick up a couple of things then.”

A few minutes later, she’d packed a small overnight bag and was back in the Jeep with Dillon and Scout.
