Erin stared out the window, replaying everything that had happened, starting with that conversation with Chief Blackstone.
How could the man be so rude? Such a jerk? And how had he gotten away with it for so long?
She believed in cops. Believed that they did good work. She hated the fact that a couple of bad ones could make all cops look bad, even when that wasnât the case.
But once certain people got into positions of power, like Blackstone had, it felt nearly impossible to change that. To oust them from their positions. And because that was the case, the power trips just seem to keep growing.
Chief Blackstoneâs was the biggest one of all right now.
âListen, I know you donât know me that well,â Dillon started beside her. âI donât want this to sound weird. But I donât think you should stay at your place by yourself tonight.â
Erin froze at Dillonâs words. She knew exactly what he was getting at.
Her place wasnât safe.
She wasnât safe.
Erin didnât want to stay by herself, either. But short of leaving town to go stay with family, she didnât have many options. There was no way she would leave this area with Bella still missing.
Dillon had stayed on her couch last night, but she couldnât ask him to do that again. It was too much.
âIâm sure Iâll be fine.â She didnât sound convincing, even to her own ears.
âHow would you feel about sleeping in the spare bedroom at my place? Carson and I will be there, along with all the dogs, of course. Youâd have your own space and most people wouldnât even know that youâre staying out there.â
He raised a good point. Everybody would assume she was staying at her place. Maybe that would allow her to get some rest so she could start fresh the next morning.
âAre you sure you really donât mind? Youâre going deeper and deeper with me, and Iâm afraid that itâs going to ruin things for you here in this town.â
He ducked his head until they were eye to eye. âErin, I know it probably feels like everybody here hates you, but I have a hard time believing thatâs true. Anybody who knows you can clearly see you have a good heart. That youâre a good person. Just because a few peopleâa few loud peopleâbad-mouth you, donât think they speak for everyone.â
Something about his words caused her cheeks to warm. He sounded so sincere, so much like he was speaking the truth. She hadnât expected to crave hearing an affirmation like that. His words brought a strange sense of comfort to her.
âThank you.â Her throat burned as the words left her lips. âI really appreciate that. If you donât mind, I think I will take you up on your offer. Iâd feel better if I wasnât at that house by myself tonight.â
âLet me just run you past your place so you can pick up a couple of things then.â
A few minutes later, sheâd packed a small overnight bag and was back in the Jeep with Dillon and Scout.
